Daisy Chain (Defiance Texas Trilogy, Book 1)
by: Mary E. DeMuth

Editorial Review:

Product Description:
The abrupt disappearance of young Daisy Chance haunts the small town of Defiance, Texas. Fourteen-year-old Jed Pepper searches for answers in this gritty and compelling story of love and sorrow, revealing God's hand of redemption in impossible situations. Lyrical fiction from a bright new literary talent.

The Daisy Chain is a wonderful example of the art of story-telling; colorful language, laden with imagery and emotion, captures the essence of life in small-town Texas as a young teenage boy wrestles with difficult questions beyond his years. The innocence of first love, the exploration of dysfunctional families, the difference between religion and faith, the realities of this harsh world and how people cope, an unsolved mystery- all cleverly and believably woven into a unique tapestry that beckons the reader in for closer examination. Religion is a major tenet of this story, but its presence was recognized and appreciated by this reader as an authentic weight-bearing pillar in the foundation of the tale's setting. For those who have read The Secret Life of Bees, this story falls in the same vein, an engaging yet somewhat unwelcome introduction of the innocent into a complicated adult world. One feels compelled to shield and protect the characters from the inevitable outcome. At this story's end, the reader will be left wanting more, for "all will be revealed in due time". This particular reader, for one, is anxious for resolution.

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - Hated Daisy Chain
This was a terrible book. I did not realize until i read it that there was such a strong religious overtone at every page. The book story shows terrible values with the preacher physically and verbally abusing his wife and children on a regular basis so they become subservient to him. The story line and the ending of the book is even more troubling. What type of social skills and morale is this book recommending to young people. I will never have bought this book if I had known any of this.

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - Daisy Chain: A Novel
I was very unhappy with this book, I felt like I was being preached at every sentence.Story took to long to get to the point and even then, I was upset with the ending. I don't think I'll read the next one and it will be a long time before I read another spiritual book.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Life - It's Hard to Understand
It would be a good subtitle for this book. It's well written; there are a lot of characters; the subject is sad...and I still read the entire book and bought the 2nd in the trilogy.

This book is all too real, with so many of the horrible things that really do happen in life. It brings a new dimension to the normal books and television shows...that being, can we control or choose how the things that happen in our lives impact our beliefs about ourselves, the colors through which we see the world. In my life it's called...it will be interesting to see how this too shall be used for good.

A young man, living in a "Christian" environment with an abusive father, a mother unable to protect or exist in the home without mentally leaving with headaches, a little sister that needs and loves her older brother, a friend that becomes a missing person in the first few pages and all the remainder of the cast of characters living in the midst of this group.

It's a good book - whether you're someone that has lived through a tough family life or you're someone that came from a loving family...the book will help you understand some of the damage that can be done and some of the ways that the damage may be limited. Like I said, I bought the second book in the trilogy.

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - Preachy Nonsense!
This could have been a good story if religion was not shoved down my throat in practically every paragraph. I am now never going to download another "free" amazon read again: every one I have tried has turned out to be a religious tract masquerading as a novel.
