The Apothecary's Daughter by: Julie Klassen
|
Editorial Review:
Product Description: Lillian Haswell, brilliant daughter of the local apothecary, yearns for more adventure and experience than life in her father's shop and their small village provides. She also longs to know the truth behind her mother's disappearance, which villagers whisper about but her father refuses to discuss. Opportunity comes when a distant aunt offers to educate her as a lady in London. Exposed to fashionable society and romance--as well as clues about her mother--Lilly is torn when she is summoned back to her ailing father's bedside. Women are forbidden to work as apothecaries, so to save the family legacy, Lilly will have to make it appear as if her father is still making all the diagnoses and decisions. But the suspicious eyes of a scholarly physician and a competing apothecary are upon her. As they vie for village prominence, three men also vie for Lilly's heart.
I found this book on accident, but I purchased it because it looked good. The book doesn't have the best plot, but the characters and situations keep you reading until the end. If you love historical fiction I would DEFINITELY recommend this book.

Initially I liked the book but the writing and plot deteriorated. Not worth your time.

Great novel about old English tradition and Apothecary's customs. Great story of love, loss and life adventure. You could really relate to Lillys character who was full of wonder and charisma and determination. She also defied the traditional role of a woman as an apothecary's daughter. From the beginning to end it was a page turner, at least for me. I was so intriged and needed to finish the book but sad when it was over. This is my first Julie Klassen and look forward to more.

This book started out with a lot of promise, an interesting time and topic that, in the end, turned out to be just another romance type story. There was a lot of detail with the Apothecary angle, but the story still ended up just being a "who shall I marry, and does he really want to marry me?" that was drawn out till I didn't care anymore.

This was a nice read, but I am not gushing over it because it was simply too drawn out.
